Les Ichneumonidae sont des Hyménoptères TEREBRANTS .
Il en existerait 60 000 espèces de par le monde.
Le premier tergite abdominal en forme de pétiole, est étroit à la base et élargi à l'extrémité. Deuxième suture de l'abdomen imbriquée, le bord postérieur du 2e tergite chevauche le bord antérieur du 3e. Antennes filiformes d'au moins 16 articles. Aréole à 5 côtés, rarement à 4, toujours présente et bien nette.
A l'aide de leur tarière les femelles pondent un oeuf à l'intérieur de leur hôte (Lépidoptères, Tenthrèdes ou Coléoptères). Certaines larves sont ectoparasites ou attendent le passage de leur hôte.
